Gundua Entrepreneurship Groups trained in Potato Farming.

The Gundua Foundation partner Hand in Hand East Africa (HiH EA) conducted trainings in modern agricultural practices. The main objective was to demonstrate to group members on the proper ways of doing potato farming which is suited for the climatic conditions in and around Ex-Lewa. The group members enrolled in Gundua entrepreneurship project identified provided a demonstration farm and certified seeds, fertilizer and pesticides were supplied by HiH EA.

Three groups were trained by the agricultural extension officer from Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Peter Kariuki. He showed them on how best to prepare their land for planting, amount of fertilizer to use, proper spacing and on how to care for the potatoes until harvest.

The three groups that benefitted from the training include Maritati, Pioneer and Mugumone. The groups will continue to be supervised by the agricultural extension officer until the potatoes are harvested

The three groups that benefitted from the training include Maritati, Pioneer and Mugumone. The groups will continue to be supervised by the agricultural extension officer until the potatoes are harvested.

Group members who are all small scale farmers were delighted to learn on the recommended way of doing potato farming with majority admitting that they have been planting and spacing potatoes in their farms the wrong way. The promised to continue participating actively in the demo farms to ensure that they gain knowledge by practicing what they are being taught by the agriculture extension officer.

Apart from potato farming HiH EA intends to help other groups in learning about the best practices in poultry and dairy farming in the subsequent farms. This is aimed at empowering group members in the Gundua entrepreneurship project to increase production in their agribusinesses.
